What We Call A Cookie Covers Four Basic Components
The cookie itself is really just a name=value pair like age=42, sex=female or id=abc123, but this pairing has a life cycle and may be thought of as existing in 4 separate places or stages. The four basic elements below cover all of what we consider to be a cookie.
- The request by the site to have the browser accept a reminder - the Set-Cookie: event.
- The actual storage of the reminder by the browser on the user's computer - the client cookie store.
- The sending of the reminder by the browser site who issued the cookie - the Cookie: event.
- The storage and use of the cookie by the website who issued such cookie - Cookie logging and use.
For more information on each of these stages please consult the detail pages.
